Model Smart Design, robotic control adapted to welding technologies
The Model Smart Design project
The Asturian company Model Smart Design wanted to improve working conditions in manual welding processes, where it is difficult to incorporate traditional automation methods. This goal is becoming a reality thanks to the technical advice it received from our partner Idonial through the services it provides within the framework of AsDIH.
What problems does it seek to solve or improve?
The company wanted to validate a technological solution for manual welding based on a remote-controlled robot. This would make the process more intuitive and less strenuous for the operator. In addition, other job profiles with different skills could be adapted to this process, which would help to solve the shortage of professionals for this type of work.
The project considers the following aspects:
- Definition of the issue requirements, analysis of existing technologies, and application to the existing issue.
- Development of technology and programming for the experimentation of joystick control technologies on the collaborative robots of IDONIAL’s Collaborative Robotics Laboratory.
- Adaptation of the results to the welding application, as well as conceptual design of the integration interface of the robotic and welding system.
What digital technology is used to address the issue?
A system based on the ROS2 framework will be developed to create an intuitive control system, which will be validated at IDONIAL’s Collaborative Robotics Laboratory, seeking a solution that can be scalable and applicable to other industrial robotic systems.
What results does it imply, and what impact does it have?
With this project, they aim to carry out a technological test of the proposed solution, which will be validated in a simple real-world welding application with operators unfamiliar with collaborative robotics. This will allow them to evaluate the suitability and practicality of controlling robots by remote control, which will enable them to take the first steps towards its future implementation in manual welding processes.
